Gunji Taiho Jutsu - 3 Grappling Survival Core

It is easy to make the statement that Military and Law Enforcement communities need to train in Martial Arts and Combatives.  More specifically many will say that they need training in Grappling and Jiu-Jitsu.  Everything here is not wrong.  By practicing Martial Arts and grappling-based Combatives, Military personnel will gain many more benefits other than learning defensive and offensive moves.  There are lists of benefits that can be written on the value of training and receiving better confidence in yourself and the confidence to do your job.

When it came time to develop the Gunji Taiho Jutsu's (GTJ) grappling curriculum, we went for the context of Grappling Survival and the core positions in arresting arts.  This includes grappling-base self-defense movements, stand up grappling, and ground survival.  With this in mind, GTJ's grappling survival core needed to follow principles and try not to be so "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-centric."  I will expand.

Sometimes finding yourself on the ground with a high level of skill is simply just not the best strategy in place.  For arresting technique and weapons-based environment, learning sport jiu-jitsu from Brazil or other countries is the wrong mindset, and tactically just not the best practice.  Rules such as the 5 second-ground fighting-rule can really open the eyes of skillful Judokas or black belt practitioners in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  The ground survival game is, "You have 5 seconds to do something on the ground and then need to stand up."  If a person during this drill goes over 5 seconds, someone or multiple people will jump into the fight.  It is a game-changer for training and insight.

In GTJ the Grappling Survival Core curriculum does have great grappling details, drills, and instruction on the core positions of ground fighting.  The context and idea "were" to give Security Forces and Law Enforcement a working knowledge and practice in Grappling; however, overall these needed to have arresting-arts in mind.  The GTJ PCS strategies were the system to keep everything explored together and useful for arresting arts.  PCS 1-3 kept a filter on the direction of how far into the curriculum we all needed to go before becoming too sportive-based or just practicing things that are not needed to be effective in grappling Combatives.

We focused on the basics techniques, we worked on basic principles and went after the important details so Martial Artists reading the essay-like textbooks or watched the Gunji University videos could add to their knowledge or in a way delete techniques they were doing in a wrong way or point of view.  We wanted everyone to learn something.
