It is important to do what is needed for the community. - Gunji Taiho Jutsu is a Military Arresting | Apprehension Art.
Over the many years of training in Martial Arts, it seems like every generation builds off the former to improve the direction he or she is heading with the study and practice of Jujutsu. We have become no different in this approach as we find ourselves teaching and working with Military personnel while serving in the Armed Services. This time on the mats is different compared to what is happening during off duty hours at a local Martial Arts school.
In a way, Gunji Taiho Jutsu is the new era for taiho jutsu techniques (arresting technique) as it is a progressive way to teach Military or Law Enforcement personnel many of the traditional and contemporary jujutsu techniques of control and arrest while at the same time keeping mindful of secondary weapon systems during training and complementing all of the current and evolving Military Combatives programs in place for the different branches of the Military.
Gunji Taiho Jutsu has reformed its arresting technique more than any other taiho jutsu organization, and quite frankly, we are concerned that many continue without progressing in a changing world.
Here is a quick look at the GTJ systems.
GTJ PAT Triangle Theory
He or those that control the triangle structure will control PCS 2 in GUNJI TAIHO JUTSU.
Don't allow the suspect to maintain the top of the triangle structure.
PAT is most effective when two officers break the triangle structure by rushing, controlling the sides of the suspect or even the rear, and while on the ground. PAT can stand and be used interchangeably for the Partner Arrest Technique or Partner Assisted Technique.
GTJ PAT ABC's
PAT A - Arm Controls
PAT B - Body Controls
PAT C - Cranium Controls
Have Awareness of the suspect's hands and Approach with handcuffs in your hand eye view level.
Put the arrestee at a disadvantage position and connect to his or her Base.
Use Controlling force to complete the handcuffing, Control yourself (emotions) and the overall position.
Complete the handcuffing technique in a direct manner and avoid unnecessary steps and lag time(s).
Improved searching strategies and tactics.
Gunji Taiho Jutsu Develops 1st and 2nd Form (Katas) for Arresting Technique.
A goal of Ichi-No-Kata is to having a formal kata for taiho jutsu that gives a practitioner another level of studying and training arresting techniques. The form showcases the unique principles, methods, theories, and techniques of GTJ.
The Japanese word for rotation is kaiten. The arresting technique's primary objective is turning a resisting person to his stomach. This second GTJ kata teaches essential system concepts, such as PCS and PCA strategies on the ground.

Tony has over 30 years of experience in Grappling and Jiu Jitsu having been taught by many of the top Jiu Jitsu instructors in the United States and Brazil and for over 25 years has worked as a Jiu-Jitsu instructor. He started studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu in 1995 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and now has become one of the style’s most prominent American-born figures. In addition, Tony has earned numerous rankings in Japanese and Brazilian Martial Arts. He is recognized for his captivating seminars and articulate explanations of Martial Arts. Tony enjoys a reputation as a gifted instructor and a teacher of black belts.
In Tony’s pursuit of improvement as a teacher, he spent two years in the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor program in Torrance, California. While there, Tony assisted Rorion Gracie and 3-time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Royce Gracie in seminars and training sessions to diverse groups, ranging from the FBI, Navy Seals, Army Rangers, and Los Angeles Police Department (L.A.P.D.) to women and children. He also learned semi-privately from Grand Master Helio Gracie during this period while he visited the academy.
Tony has worked as an elementary school teacher in Los Angeles, CA. and Philadelphia, PA. He is a graduate of Concordia University of Southern California Irvine with a Master’s Degree in Education in Curriculum & Instruction. He has also completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Tony continues to teach martial arts seminars across the United States and abroad.
Today, “little” Tony is known as a leader in the Jiu-Jitsu community for his vision, educational work, and commitment to the Jiu-Jitsu Global Federation, as well as for his detailed and well-organized instruction, showcased in his instructional videos. He has received international acclaim for all of this and has been featured on Budo Videos Rolled Up, InsideBJJ.com, Mat Time Radio, Open Mat Radio, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Rocks Podcasts, Jiu Jitsu documentaries, Japanese|European|Brazilian|American Jiu Jitsu Magazines and endless blogs about state of the art in Jiu-Jitsu.
Tony possesses unique, certified, and specialized knowledge because he is a rare individual who has received training from the Gracie Academy (under Grand Master Helio Gracie), BJJ Revolution Team (under Master Carlson Gracie), and Master Rickson Gracie. Additionally, he has undergone extensive training in Taiho Jutsu, Judo, Aikido, and Kendo in Japan, holding certifications from the Taizan Ryu Taiho Jutsu Federation, Kodokan, Aikikai, and All Japan Kendo Federation in Tokyo.
The development ranks White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Brown 3, Brown 2, and Brown 1 are kyu grades. Official rank in GTJ comes with becoming an instructor at the basic instructor one, senior instructor two, and master instructor three ranks. It should be noted that if a Gunji Taiho Jutsu student passes successfully a GTJ Kata testing of both Ichi-No-Kata and Kaiten-Katame-No-Katas as the Tori, these evaluations will meet the requirements to earn a Gunji Taiho Jutsu Yūdansha certification. Yūdansha means one that holds a dan rank.
